Excerpt from Brain Jack by Brian Falkner: “‘Why suddenly self-destruct when you’ve already won?’” (165). I chose this excerpt because of its simplistic but yet meaningful message. It conveys a message to people who are having or hardships or issues within their life. It basically means that a person should not become stressed out or depressed about issues because in the eventually, that person is going to succeed.…
At some point in their lives, most people have heard their parents utter a variation of the phrase, "Life's not fair". This phrase about the injustice of life is a common theme that has shown up within many literary works throughout time. For example, we can find this theme in "The Odyssey", "Oedipus Rex", and even "The Book of Job". "The Odyssey" is a story about a King named Odysseus, who is fated by the gods to make a perilous from Troy to his home in Ithaca. The only reason for this journey is that the gods' wanted the pleasure of seeing Odysseus suffer.…
“The most powerful force on Earth is the human soul on fire” (Ferdinand Foch). The Fire; The soul and the fire inside are what cooking is all about. There soul in cooking for yourself and for other people, and Guy Fieri definitely puts his soul into what he does.. In the Book of Job a great quarrel or debate between Job and his three friends, liphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite. This debate only occurs after Job’s outburst in which he cursed the day of his birth and began wondering why those who long for death continue to live. Following his cries, Job’s friends offer their though that ultimately lead Job in the wrong direction. Each friend of Job’s offers a reason to Job’s suffering. For example, Eliphaz justifies his suffering and says that his suffering is caused because he is wicked.…
How to go about handling a situation when seeing a child chained to a tree? In the story “Puppy” by George Saunders, Marie one of the main characters wondered the same thing. Saunders story had multiple viewpoints one being from Marie, a mother of two children and Callie, a mother of one who is trying to sell a puppy to Marie. Saunders has a deeper meaning than just being about selling someone a puppy, it is a story that tries and make you see that looks are deceiving and that we should not judge a book by its cover so to speak.…
The Righteous Sufferer The Bible is filled with wonderful stories that both inspire and more often than not, teach a lesson or rather allows readers to draw knowledge from the individuals within the stories. One such book is the book of Job, which is the story of a man who goes from living the good life, losing it all, and then getting it all back again. In the book of Job, In the Hebrew Bible, the author, uses imagery, symbolism, and irony to develop the theme of suffering of the righteous. Which means that the righteous suffer and are not immune to troubles and trials.…
In today’s society we are introduced to many problems that are always put to the side and is never taken care of because people are so in denial and don’t want to face the truth. In the simpsons intro the writer uses satire( the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues) to explore the flaws of society through his made up fictional characters. Some issues that I have come to a realization are the fact that parents in this century are not paying enough attention to their children and holding them fully responsible for their own actions. In other words children are doing whatever they please with no care whatsoever in the world because they know that there is no consequences for their actions. This also causes these children and teens to misbehave in class which leads to a distraction that takes away learning from kids whom parents actually send them to school to learn.…
With relatable characters, The Peanuts comic strip touches the heart of all ages. Schulz drew the comic strip true to his own life. People could identify with the “voices” and “hearts” of the characters. Since all of the characters were based off of someone in Schulz’s life, it makes the characters personality and problems more realistic. Although the Peanuts Gang takes the form of children, in reality, they all have problems adults face.…
The problem of evil is an ancient theological problem that has been in existence for a long time. Evil is an immoral, benevolent behavior towards oneself, others, and nature. Unjust suffering occurs in one’s life because of the following: human beings are sinners, a way for God to test whether one’s faith will change and because nature is unpredictable. This is proven in the Hebrew Bible, the Book of Job, and in the “Christianity” chapter of Roy Clouser, the author of The Myth of Religious Neutrality. There are several answers to the ways evil can be solved, but none is satisfying because evil is a tradition that has been in occurrence.…
Throughout history the themes and notions of the Bible have been controversial. Even today, the books of the Old Testament are up for debate, as to whether they are relevant, irrelevant, or offensive to people. Different individuals, however, seem to have different views to the passages, regardless of their religious affiliation. Due to the different views posed by contemporary people, the biblical passages tend to relate to matters based on religious views or secular views. The three passages, Exodus, Daniel 6, and Job depict the relevance of the Bible today through the religious and secular views uncovered.…
11. The significance about the new cat and his markings is its resemblance of Pluto. As recalled by the main character, he noticed the new cat has a missing eye like Pluto did. However, the main comparison between this cat and Pluto was the white splotch, covering the region of the breast. When Pluto was murdered by the main character, there was a rope around him that caused his death.…
1. Much of “Brownies” is very funny. What role does humor have in the story—and how does it relate to the decidedly unhumorous ending? The story is very humorous.…
But I want to go a little deeper than that, maybe they main character bought these struggles onto himself rather than it being “God’s fault”, as some would say. As a Christian stugglist I view all works of literature as the human struggle and how or why it is happening. If we give the devil just the slightest detail of our life he can find a way to kill, steal, and destroy, in this story that would be kill your income, steal your home, and destroy your family. The main character always turns to beer to make the day go smoother. We read what happen to his old job… he had been drinking which in the end made him lose his job.…
Pain is a blessing. Philip Yancey, author of Where is God When it Hurts? (Zondervan, 1990), proposes many thoughtful illustrations of suffering in our lives. He describes pain in a curious fashion, but offers multiple points and recognizes various situations that commonly occur in our lives. Philip Yancey introduces life-changing ideas that involve the purpose of pain, where it comes from, and God’s role in suffering,…
The Simpsons has become a staple of American life since its first release in 1989. This long lasting cartoon comedy achieved the true essence of satire by capturing the moment of stupidity among today’s stereotypical American ‘everyman’. By using a wide range of satirical devices such as: parody, irony, sight gags, absurdity and black humour, The Simpsons develops and enhances brilliant and distinct characters in order to create the fascinating and hilarious satire. Therefore, The Simpsons successfully points out the social issues while making the audience laughing at the ridiculous characters, as well as leading the audience to question themselves.…
