The Comeback

“ Let's go boys!” I screamed as we raced out onto the ice. As we started our warmup drill before the most important game of our life I looked to the other side of the ice and saw the other team. “ Jeez,” I think to myself, they are definitely bigger, stronger, and faster. I shake it off as I hear the buzzer sound which means warm ups are over. We all bring it in to my coach and he says the same thing that he always does. All I care about is the game and once it starts I’m in the zone.

The left wing on their team picked up the loose puck next to the defenceman and takes it behind him. “ EHH!” The buzzer goes off because he just scored 5 seconds into the game. I sigh to myself and assure my teammates, “ Guys it’s ok it’s just one goal we can bounce back.” I never should've said that becuase 30 seconds later they scored again, then again, then 7 goals later I knew this had to stop. “Ehhh!” The buzzer signaled the end of the first period.

starting an attack of their own passing back and forth but still not able to open any gaps. Then the unexpected happened U.S. coach Bob Motzko called for Quick to join the offensive rush leaving the United States net empty. My domination of easily breezing by my neighbors in street hockey and always ranked at the top of stat sheets for scoring in recreational hockey, abruptly ended when I joined my first competitive travel hockey team. Shamefully looking at me as if I were an ally of the other team, I became alienated after my team after they began the tradition of…
