Chicken has become the universal food of the modern day era, crossing into different cultural boundaries without major obstacles (Smithsonian). In Jared Diamond’s book Guns, Germs, and Steel, Diamond described chickens among other small domestic mammals as useful to humanity. However, Diamond also says that the chicken, unlike the horse or the ox, did little to change the course of history, as the horse became a part of military warfare that permitted armies to travel longer distances faster. While the chicken was never useful for conquering civilizations, it was, and still is, a sacred animal in some cultures. The hen, a female chicken, became a worldwide symbol of nurturance and fertility. Eggs were hung in Egyptian temples to ensure that the annual flooding of the Nile was bountiful (Smithsonian).
