The Colosseum was opened in the year 80 CE under the Emperor Titus. It became a very popular place for the citizens of Rome to spend their time. During the opening festival, which lasted one hundred days, over nine thousand animals were killed during the event. The Colosseum covers over six acres, the height is almost 160 feet, and it is a third of a mile in circumference. It had seating for fifty thousand viewers as well as an awning to cover part of the Colosseum. It was in use for about five hundred years and some of the entertainment were gladiator battles, large battles that were reenactments of real ones, exotic animals, and public executions. The Roman mystery cults were cults dedicated to different gods or goddesses depending on the cult. They were called mystery cults because the initiation process was often a mystery. Some common characteristics of these cults were fasting, the promise of personal immortality, and prayer like recitations. In the reading Initiation into the Cult of Isis written by Apuleius he speaks of what followers said during the final part of the initiation process. They praised Isis as if she were the god of all gods when they say she saved man kind and that nature bends to her will. To the followers nothing they say or do will ever please her so they will keep her in their hearts
