The Colorado River-Personal Narrative

Four in the morning. It was easy to forget Arizona's usual suffocating heat as my sweatshirt did its best to battle off the freezing morning. Cold crisp wind nips at my exposed skin as I walk to the edge of the scene and feel the cool metal railing under my hands. Viewing the Grand Canyon for the first time, there is one word that comes to mind, clouds. That is all that could be seen, long, wispy, almost mocking clouds. As if they knew that they were in the way of a glorious sunrise. Hiding it away for another day. Disappointment was the mutual feeling of everyone who had braved the cold. The soft sound of rushing water was the only sound that seemed to breach the silence. As the next few hours passed, the clouds left the scene, the anticipated …show more content…
There was no rock similar to another. Every inch of the large expanse was so perfect not even the best sculptor could imagine the outcome. This was beyond natural beauty, this was supernatural. The colorado river was rushing proudly down like it was on a mission. There are few experiences that can be compared to the freeing feeling of sitting on the edge of the canyon. Feet dangling over the ancient cliff, the breeze whispered sweet nothings as it swept by. Thoughts are consumed by the overwhelming beauty that seems closer as ever before. There was only this moment, only the great expanse, only the sweet smell of fresh flowers that popped up wherever they could. Sliding my hands over the rock, feeling every smooth crevice in the cliff and imagining the stories behind every one of them. Thinking back to the history, the thousand years that it took to create something so breathtaking. Looking out at the view it is no wonder why it was chosen to be one of the top places in the world. Nothing is out of place. Every rock is secure where it belongs. The caverns are never ending, they seem to roll on for an eternity. If I could pick a perfect moment to go back to, this would be

Kevin Fedarko sends a message to his readers that the Grand Canyon is beautiful and it should be preserved. Humans should not continue to create more structures in the canyon because it takes away from the natural beauty, but Fedarko also makes it clear that dams already built by humans have beauty in them too. The message that fedarko wants his audience to receive is that nature and technology can be combined and can create outstanding things, but there needs to be a balance. Humans cannot get too carried away with technology and forget to see the natural beauty that surrounds everything. Kevin Fedarko uses metaphors to illustrate the beauty that is seen in the Grand Canyon.…

The waterfall wasn’t as big as Yosemite Falls but watching the little droplets fall and the light hitting it at just the right angle, and watching all the different woodland species prance about, going along with their day, without a care in the world, made it look and feel like it was a paradise from a movie. We weren’t being disrupted by loud car horns because we were alone with ourselves, our thoughts, and the wilderness. The water rushing echoed in the distance and the pitter patter of the water flow pounds onto the rocks below. Located at the bottom was a serene pool which we would sometimes swim in. Every time there is a possibility for us going to Mount Shastina I am filled with joy and nostalgia longing to recreate more…

As the powerful Colorado River churned beneath me, as it has for centuries, and the relentless sun peaked over the top of the North Rim, I could not help but feel astounded. I was in a timeless place: a place disconnected from the society I had left behind miles ago. Down here, in the lowest section of the Grand Canyon, it was just me, my friends, and the heat. Always the heat. We had started our journey, a run from the Grand Canyon’s North Rim to the South Rim, at 4 AM in a futile attempt to avoid the skyrocketing temperature and finish before the sun became the determining factor in the success of our venture.…

I sat on a rock watching a group of elementary school kids explore the natural world. They looked at fish, hopped on rocks and followed bugs to their hearts’ content. We were about a mile from our cabin, at the end of Christopher Creek before it went under the road. As a junior counselor, I probably went way out of my jurisdiction in taking my four campers on such a long trip down the creek, but their enjoyment was worth the potential trouble. I couldn’t believe it; none of them had ever taken a trip down a creek.…

I open my eyes to bright lights and blank, cold, lifeless walls. As I turn my head I notice the IV in my arm. The slow, steady drip of the medication reminds me of a river. No. More like a mountain stream, alive in the spring, given life by the melting snow.…

It was a slow moving watercourse most of the year but in the spring it flowed with force, swollen with the winter melt and emptying its contents into the Columbia River, before moving downstream onto Cascade Locks. At this time of the year the river was halfway to being frozen. The better part of Autumn was finished and the trees following the river were stark and almost leafless, the colorful reds and yellows of The Fall giving way to a brown carpet of mush. Today the black water was unhurried, its surface pockmarked by raindrops with the occasional swirl to draw attention to its icy currents.…

Overgrown grass grew between the crevices that the rocks had formed. I walked up to the majestic flat stones and placed my hand on the one closest to me. Taking a deep breath, I found a crevice that my foot could reach and hoisted myself up and continued to climb to the top. Once up there, I turned to face the city and sat down. The rocks were warmed from the sun and although they were rigid, they seemed unbelievably comfortable.…

The experience of nature can be interpreted countless ways with endless attempted explanations. This indescribability makes profound moments within nature that much more individual and sometimes life-changing. For myself, I have been fortunate to work for land management agencies with the opportunity for these experiences on a daily basis. There are a few that stand out, seared into my memory, forever with me to reflect back on and experience again in my mind's eye. For me, my most profound moments within nature have been alone to reflect on the beauty, solitude, and small details often are taken for granted around me.…
