In this story almost all the women are under the domination of men. Women are abused; especially Celie is raped, beaten and abused by all the men around her, firstly by her step-father and by her husband. One of the major themes in this story is domestic violence. During that time of the story, abuse from husband was common, tolerated, and believed to be right. Men wanted to believe their behaviors were masculine in society. Celie bears the abuses from her husband because that’s the only thing she knew considering the fact she grew up inan abusive home. Her younger sister Nettie would write her letters telling her to fight. Nettie would tell Celie “You got to fight. You got to fight. Celie’s answered “But I don’t know how to fight. All I know how to do is stay alive.” (Walker,25-26). Celie’s stepfather is the first to abuse, beat, and rape her. “You better not never to tell nobody but God. It’d kill your mammy.”(Walker, 11).
