“I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it” (Walker 197). The Color Purple is the letters of Celie to God and her sister of life events she wants to talk about but does not have anyone to talk to. She often has issues she cannot handle alone and talks to Shug Avery, God or her sister about. In The Color Purple, the plot, characterization, style, and setting add to the complexity of the story. The story includes sisterly love, life struggles, and racism. The story begins with Celie writing diary entries to God. She does this to try and deal with events that have happened to her and that affected her life. “No writer has made the intimate hurt of racism more palpable than Walker. In one of the novel's most rending scenes, Celie's step-daughter-in-law, Sofia, is sentenced to work as a maid in the white mayor's house for "sassing" the mayor's wife” (Smith). Walker uses the sassy black nature of her own character to send a message about racism and discrimination. Often in The Color Purple it shows blacks as being discriminated against. Walker uses the story to try to help stop discrimination and bring equality back to life (Harris). The story is written in first person with narration flipping between Nettie and Celie. s In conclusion, Celie is a very opinionated women when given the option. Her and Nettie would do anything for eachother because they love each other. With factors such as racism, sisterly love, and life struggles the setting, characters, style, and plot affect the story in a major way. They challenge the characters making the story riveting with challenges and difficulties that bring the two girls closer to each

The first half of the book shows Celie’s thoughts while she talks to god in a diary, letting him know the events that have taken place in her life and in the lives of those around her. We as the reader feel as if we have full access to Celie’s thoughts and are able to read them with no details hidden. The Second part of the book is portrayed in letters between Celie and her sister Nettie. I thought Celie’s use of narrative was the most affective.…

Colorism, or Shadeism is defined as discrimination based on skin tone; ultimately colorism privileges lighter skinned people over their dark-skinned counterparts. Colorism is a direct consequence of Chattel Slavery and racism. While racism operates on the basis of race, colorism further perpetuates this discrimination because it influences the degree to which people will be victimized depending on their skin tone. This concept is fairly new; the term colorism was first conceived by Alice Walker in 1982. Alice Walker was born in 1944, in Eaton, GA to two sharecroppers.…
