A testament to a good work of art is one that has you questioning and attempting to reveal the ‘meaning behind the meaning’, the idea and or inspiration bethought upon the artist. The painting, Native Embrace, shows the sophistication of the world by simplicity through its color pallette, art style, and positioning.
The color pallette of the painting shows more of the basic color spectrum. The colors chosen by the artist are colors that are representative to those of nature. The chosen colors give a sense of warmth, the color of their skin, slightly brown and tan, represent the land, the dirt and muddy earth. The color of the blanket, which is almost engulfing the two natives, is representing the element of water. Whereas the color of their hair is a mixture of corruption, which ties to the element of the earth depicted in the painting, showing that with all life there is still certain darkness. Thoth is the god of knowledge and wisdom, whereas Matt is the goddess of truth and justice (Maat). The Ibis headed Thoth was often depicted as an bird, which is upon the woman’s necklace (Gill). Thoth often wore bands of the colors red, green, and blue, which can be found upon the woman throughout her body (Gill). Maat wore a band of red on her head and her symbol is the ostrich feather, which can be found on the man (Maat). They are wearing the possessions of each other, sharing is a form of respect and trust.
