This is showing that the American Dream is not conquerable and very hard to get out of. There is nothing here; this place is hopeless for people. When Tom and George are talking about Tom’s car in the Valley of Ashes, Toms says “No, he doesn’t,” said Tom coldly. “And if you feel that way about it, maybe I’d better sell it somewhere else after all.” This signifies the how above the rich are over the poor.
