The Colloquium: Personal Experience

Improved Essays
During the colloquium that was given last week there were several interesting points that were made. The colloquium was started with talking about ow how we as Christians should e open to learning and growing in everything at all times, and how we do not have to limit ourselves to only learning about one thing in a certain place or time. The next main idea that I was drawn to was that God is truth and we have no way of knowing the full truth because of our sin. It was stated that truth was taken when Adam and Eve first fell from sin and now we are confused by that truth, the example of the ping pong balls made a really good example for this idea as it showed how truth can be mistaken for something else so easily and that some tings that may look like truths are not necessarily true.
Another main point that I found to be really interesting was the idea and example of the stained glass window. This image made the point that everyone has different perspectives and people from other walks of life and other countries all have different experiences with God and how God has shown himself to them. All the points were melded together to show why the liberating arts classes are taken at college. By taking these classes people are given a way to get to see things from other peoples

On of the ladies at my church went to Indonesia tis summer and was given the opportunity to talk be the first American to talk to a Muslim village and was invited by the Muslim leader to come back and talk to the village and teach the village and Jesus and our beliefs. I think this is a great example of how different people learn and find truth is different ways from each other, and God shows us this truth in many different ways. This was just one of the things that came to my mind as way this part of the colloquium was really good and explained really

Class #1: Geo-Literacy Please 1). The photos of "Map foolery" and the "True Size of Africa" surprised me, since I had never considered that my perception of the continents size could be so skewed. It brings up the question of why maps continue to be presented in the way they are. When presented with this new knowledge we began to get a greater understanding of the world around us and how individuals have to be critical of the information they take in.…

Søren Kierkegaard, a 19th century a philosopher, once said, “God…does what is still more wonderful: he makes saints out of sinners.” While Richard J. Mouw, in his book When the Kings Come Marching In, would agree that God redeems sinners he would also argue that God desires to redeem the entire cosmos. God desires to redeem both human souls and the cosmos because both have been infected and distorted by sin. After a careful reading of Mouw’s book, it is possible to piece together a summary of the main points of the book while formulating a response to Mouw’s explanations and his life application. When the Kings Come Marching…

In "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" by Jonathan Edwards, Edwards preaches this sermon to prompt his listeners to strengthen their faith in God, by exercising imagery, figurative language, and repetition. In the first place, Edwards utilization of imagery administers the listeners with visualizations of how God rewards the followers for preserving their faith. Edwards conveys, "it is only the power and mere pleasure of God that holds you up. " This exercise allows the listeners to envision how God, an almighty figure, supports people who give their time for God.…

My favorite exhibit was in the BYU Museum, “To magnify the Lord: Six Centuries of Art and Devotion”. This exhibit was full of paintings, and artwork representing the life of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The religious artwork in this exhibit displays beautiful narratives of Christ’s life, and his ministry. All of the paintings in this exhibit relate back to the Savior, and they really emphasize the greatness, and the mercy of the Lord, and many of them portray events that occurred during his life. In this exhibit, I really like the painting by James T. Harwood, “Come Ye After Me”.…

Looking for the Truth Human beings are inquisitive and toil away to find the answers to questions that they hold dear to them. These questions include reasons for why humans exist or for why there is so much suffering in the world. As humans seek further into divulging the causes, they are simultaneously continuing their search for finding God through theology. There is a bond between theology and humans seeking meaning in their existence; when humans search for a deeper understanding, they are at the same time searching for a deeper understanding of God. In his chapter,” Discerning the Mystery of God”, in Theological Foundations, Brian D. Robinette makes three points relating to the perpetual binding between the two.…

In his book “Masterful Living: New Vocabulary for the Holy life” Kevin Mannoia introduces the reader to a new approach in interpreting the idea of holiness. He starts the book by addressing the issues that are related to the misunderstanding of holiness. For him holiness is not a complex idea, rather misinterpretation and misunderstanding have diluted our idea of holiness. As a consequence it has placed holiness into a categories of spirituality, and restrictive behaviors.…

"Salvation" by Langston Hughes spoke to me due to the familiarity and the comfortably of the writing. From birth, I grew up as a Christian living inside a pastor's home. This literary piece embodies the power of choices. The author is implying that a human should never be forced to believe, rather they hold the power of choice. All humans must come to the decision to follow Jesus by themselves.…

Appiah discusses that “unless there is a corresponding diversity in their modes of life, they neither obtain their fair share of happiness, nor grow up to the mental, moral, and aesthetic stature of which their nature is capable,” this reinforces the importance and value of diversity for personal development. Several approaches to inter-religious dialogue include focusing on the role of religious leaders as peacemakers, which is helpful in challenging prejudices and stimulating universal involvement. Coming into this class at the beginning of the semester, I was very confused about the subject of “truth”. Over the past few years, my definition of this word had changed dramatically. I had hoped that taking a deeper look into worldviews would help me create a contrast between what I did and did not believe, and if I could find the truth of Christianity which had been eluding me for so long. In this course, I found that the topics of Classical Christian Theism, Deism, Traditionalism, New Age Philosophy, and Postmodernism had all influenced my own, current understanding. And, through studying these, I realized how I had arrived at my current beliefs, and how to continue my journey for truth.…

My personal favorite, is the cityscape scene of the Brooklyn Bridge. The contrast of the black building outlines and the blended blue water colored water truly depicts how beautiful the city can be. I believe the theme of the story revolves around the message that things aren’t always as they seem, and it’s ok to try new things. The illustrations evoke the beauty a city can hold. The colors bring the story to life through the seamless transitions from page to page.…
