Alcatraz finally closed its doors in 1963 after decades of being the most infamous prison in all of America. After 29 years the prison was just too difficult and expensive to keep running (estimated 3-5 million dollars in security and maintenance allown) and was shut down. Lots of people still believe that the reason for the closure of the prison was due to the escape of the Anglin brothers, the closure of Alcatraz happened years after the escape and had no relevance to the end of Alcatraz. All of the inmates that still had to serve time behind bars were taken to other federal prisons in the area. One of the most famous quotes ever said in Alcatraz was said by Frank Weatherman
