Therefore, Conflict is important when it becomes nation wide because it forces us to learn about the problem and deal with it but, when it is hidden from us or we are afraid to speak it doesn’t allow us to progress. His body was discovered three days later and his body was so mutilated that it was hard to identify him(Orton, Emmett Till). His funeral took place in Chicago where 10,000 arrived to mourn his death and even though the body was so mutilated, his mother requested an open casket that way people can see how bad racism is(Jalon, 1955 Killing Sparked Civil Rights Revolution). The trial was know as the first great media event of the Civil Rights movement(Orton, Emmett Till). Bryant and Milam were indicted for murder and kidnapping. Two witnesses were improperly jailed to prevent a testimony again Bryant and Milan. The jury were 12 white men who had a low social status in society(Orton, Emmett Till). The trial lasted five days and in the end they were found not guilty. Following the trial 20,000 people protested in Chicago and 10,000 in Harlem for the unfair decision(Jalon, 1955 Killing Sparked Civil Rights Revolution). Milam’s and Bryant’s stores were boycotted and within 15 months all stores were wither closed down or sold. During the Cold War, citizens of the U.S. were kept away from the truth of conflicts occurring in other countries and because of that they lived in fear. The Red Scare os what made the people live in fear. The Red Scare was a time period where U.S. citizens were in fear of their own friends of being communist. This lead to the idea of McCarthyism(Orton, The Red Scare). McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of subversion or treason without proper regard for evidence. It also means "the practice of making unfair allegations or using unfair investigative techniques, in other words suspecting another person of being communist just because their ancestors wereRussian(Orton, McCarthyism). The false accusations put that person on trial and often they were thrown in prison(Orton, McCarthyism). This made the U.S. citizens falsely accuse each other of being communist because they didn’t want to be accused themselves causing them to live in fear and being afraid to speak up in society. With the Red Scare leading up to McCarthyism, it didn’t allow us to progress as people were afraid to do
