Located right below Nicaragua and North-West of Panama is the country of Costa Rica. This beautiful country has been a very popular tourist attraction for many years. Located along the western side is the Pacific Ocean, and on the east side is the Caribbean Sea. When combined both oceans make up more than 900 miles of ocean coastline. When touring through Costa Rica you can experience active volcanos, rainforests beyond imaginable, and enjoy the beautiful tropical weather. The country besets just 19,730 square miles, smaller than the state of West Virginia located in the United States. There are two mountain ranges that run north to south and are native to two thirds of the country’s total population of 4.8 million people within these ranges. …show more content…
The Cold War effected many countries throughout both North and South America including Costa Rica. It has high importance in history because it’s located between the Panama Canal and Nicaragua. This war also created a better government system for the country of Costa Rica. Because of the Cold War, Costa Rica eliminated its military, elected a new government and head of state, and drafted a new constitution. Under the governance of two political parties, Costa Rica has remained politically stable ever since. Overall, when it comes to the government of Costa Rica, since 1839 they have experienced a peaceful existence as a governmental democracy. As they do not support a military force, Costa Rica now has more available funds for more social investments than other developing countries. It’s prone to many natural disasters including floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, landslides, and volcanic eruptions. It is one of the highest risk countries when it comes to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. There are 16 volcanoes in Costa Rica and 9 of the 16 are still active. There are an estimated 77.9% of Costa’s Rica’s total population that live in high risk areas that can be exposed to multiple hazards. Some other natural disasters Costa Rica experiences are storms and floods. These both affect a large number of people each year cause a significant amount of damage. As stated in the introduction Costa Rica has two seasons with two completely different types of weather. The season which is very dry causes much drought and effects the agriculture and cattle production. Over the last 30 years, more than 800,000 residents were affected by storms, earthquakes, floods, or drought. Hurricanes are not as common in Costa Rica, and if anything turn into tropical storms before hitting. There was one instance where a powerful hurricane did hit (Hurricane Mitch) and caused great economic damage of $98
