Putin has mislead the public, claiming that 17 million Ukrainians are ethnic Russians, which is equivalent to 37 percent of Ukraine’s population. Putin is not afraid to twist facts and use them to his own advantage. He manipulates the public with these false statistics to convince the Russian people to attack Crimea, a small peninsula in Ukraine. However, these false facts are a disadvantage for Russia. The Russian people think they have 17 million people on their side, but in reality, they only have about 7 million people supporting their cause. Putin is using the rebel offensive as a “show of strength” to discredit Poroshenko, president of Ukraine, in the 2015 elections (Matthews). Putin wants someone in office that he knows he can control. Putin has a history of establishing facts first and negotiating later (Owen). Russia is trying to see how much they can get away until America or Europe back lashes.
