Merriam Webster defines ethics as “the code of good conduct for an individual or group” ("Ethics Synonyms | Merriam-Webster Thesaurus," 2015) and unethical as “not conforming to a high moral standard; morally unacceptable” ("Unethical Synonyms, Unethical Antonyms | Merriam-Webster Thesaurus," 2015) In conclusion, it is safe to say that the actions taken by Wheaton College were not unethical at all. First, Wheaton college has set a moral standard for themselves as well as their student body. Second, students at Wheaton college are not pressured to seek an education at this school and thus approve of the standards and are in concurrence with the same. Third, the college did everything they could to keep the negative impact on the student to a …show more content…
("Statement of Faith and Educational Purpose | Wheaton," n.d.) He set forth what the college 's standards are. Also, he mentions several Christians believe pillars such as creation vs evolution. Even though he never mentioned contraception in his statement, it remains an implied Christian stance. Provided, the modern birth control was unknown in biblical times the Bible itself remains silent on said matter. Nevertheless, all over in the Bible one can find passages about children and birth as Gods will. ("What does the Bible say about birth control / contraceptives? Should Christians use birth control?," 2015) The interpretation is then, preventing procreation and the bearing of children is against the standard set by a firmly religious organization. However, these standards and stances are completely voluntary to be accepted by each person or not which I will illustrate in my second …show more content…
In an effort to soften the financial hardship on students caused by losing the Wheaton College student health insurance plans henceforth “SHIP, ” the college created a Benevolence Fund ("Student Health Insurance Benevolence Fund | Wheaton," n.d.) “A “benevolence fund,” that is, a monetary reserve kept in order to help those in need. Bukowski v. Clarkson University In 2012, the case of Bukowski v. Clarkson University made it all the way to the highest New York state court. This case involved the plaintiff, Shawn Bukowski, suing his school on the grounds of negligence by the defendant (Lippman, 2012). Shawn Bukowski was a pitcher for the baseball team at Clarkson University, where, during an indoor practice, was hit by a line drive in the jaw and sustained an injury. Bukowski felt that Clarkson University and their baseball coach had acted negligently and put him in unreasonable risk of harm, because there were conditions on the field that enhanced his risk to sustaining this type of injury (Lippman, 2012).…

In my opinion when it comes to if Hobby Lobby not offering their employees contraceptives or Wheaton College choice to end all student health care was, ethical. My reasons behind why I feel this way is because for one, it goes against everything that Hobby Lobby CEO stand for. As for Wheaton College stopping offering health care to their students, I believe that it should be the responsibility of the student to have some type of health care and it should be the institution responsibility to provide that insurance. However, there should be a liability insurance in place just in case a student gets injured while on campus, but other than that the student should have some type of insurance. Hobby Lobby is a Christian based crafts store.…

One of the most recent ethical dilemmas in American sport is the Title IX lawsuit of Hernandez vs. Baylor University. This is without a doubt one of the most prominent Title IX lawsuits to be filed in the 2000s. The lawsuit filed by Hernandez specifically states that she was raped by a player on the Bears’ football team, and that the university police refused to accommodate to her specific needs following the incident, simply because the rape occurred off-campus. Also, the lawsuit claims that the university failed to properly train their employees on the appropriate responses to sexual assault, and other Title IX policies. Perhaps the most outstanding piece of information in this case is that the university was aware that the player involved,…

George believes that abortion should not be legalized. That it should be restricted. He states “A pro-life advocate sees abortion as a sin against God who infuses life at the moment of conception; a pro-choice advocate sees abortion as a decision to be made in accordance with the best scientific opinion as to when the beginning of life, as we know it, occurs.” (182) I believe that in the bible it does state that abortion is wrong, so Mr. George made a good point there.…

In today’s society, we tend to put labels on things that are against our views, one of those things being Planned Parenthood. There are many different opinions on what Planned Parenthood does and doesn’t do for the citizens of America. Some people believe Planned Parenthood to be “Orwellian” and others believe it to be an advantageous source for society. One of the services Planned Parenthood provides Americans with is cancer screening. “If Planned Parenthood is defunded, American women (and men) will miss out on more than 650,000 cancer prevention and screening services” (McNally).…

There are people who support the defunding of Planned Parenthood, but there is no substantial evidence to support the righteousness of this action. It is well known that “The Catholic Church continues to frown on contraception” (“How”). This will obviously influence Catholics to defund Planned Parenthood because the organization provides many different forms of contraceptives, which would seemingly violate their religious rules. However, “Protecting oneself from them is more than just a good idea. It is an investment in future good health, in future relationships, in the ability to have children, perhaps in the chance for a long life” (Yancey 87).…

The use of contraception is not immoral because there isn’t an individual to be deprived of a valuable future that early on. A sperm and an egg are two organisms, and before fertilization there is no specific individual organism meaning that it could not be “deprived of its future”. Neither the individual sperm, nor the individual egg, has a future of value. Only after fertilization occurs, does a fetus exist that possesses a valuable future. (Marquis 469)…
