The mystery of how selective hearing works is how humans can tune into a single speaker while tuning out their crowd with a noisy atmosphere has been answered. The concept is called “The Cocktail Party Theory” they are able to focus on one particular conversation that they want to hear. So for an example, if someone was speaking to someone, but they heard their name mentioned in a nearby conversation they would be able to zone in on that particular conversation and listen. Also, this reminds me of selective attention when one focus their attention on one thing while other things are going on around them. An example would be at work I have the same name as one of my managers. I have to use selective attention to tuning out the other
