Laugh Clown Laugh is about more than just a good laugh The art of the clown has kept people entertained for centuries, but for Berlin based Reinhard Horstkotte--a seasoned clown of 30+ years--being a clown means more to him than just giving folks a good laugh. Horstkotte’s persona-- Filou the Clown--is not what one might expect from typical clown fare. He doesn’t mask his face in a bright shade of white; doesn’t wear overbearingly bright clothes; doesn’t wear a big curly/bushy wig on his head.…

However, by the 1920s and 1930s, the mischief and pranks began to turn into acts of vandalism, property damage and at several points’ physical assaults. Eventually by the late 30s, vandalism decreased due to efforts by schools and communities to curb these by encouraging a safer “Trick or Treat” concept and many groups set up school carnivals for others to enjoy at Halloween. Eventually, Halloween became more of an American holiday for both children and adults alike…

I believe that as Americans, we’re scared to accept difference, even in this day and age. We tell ourselves that we are more tolerant and accepting, looking to how far we have come, but in reality, we’re currently stuck in a rut. The ones who fall victim to this hallucination are actually the young people. We think we are America’s next great hope, blaming the intolerant ones on the older generation, when in reality we’re just as foolish as the generations before in relations of…

The Clown Panic Seen from a Social Psychology Standpoint The article I chose was about the recent anxiety about clowns caused by the plague of aggressive individuals dressed as clowns in America. Ruben Castaneda, a staff writer of U.S. News, wrote this article on the 17th of October of this year. The best chapter to accompany this article would be chapter 12 Social Psychology. I used this chapter to understand why the mass hysteria has a spread, the reason behind people's behavior caused by the attacks, and what could happen if authorities don’t do their job.…

Jeffrey Jerome Cohen in his article “Fear of the Monster is Really a Kind of Desire” examines the issue of being with a monster or better be the monster ourselves. The desire it can be either for power, freedom, or even just to be the center of attention. “We distrust and loathe the monster at the same time we envy its freedom, and perhaps its sublime despair” (Cohen, 190). People tend to watch scary movies and read monster stories and feel attracted to one of the monsters and wish to be that monster. In Halloween is the only time when a human being can express the realm of the monster they want to be just for a night and celebrate by asking for candy in the neighborhood or having a Halloween party.…
