It is undeniable that global warming is an issue to address now, and not in the future. Science proves that temperatures have been on a steady rise, according to the Press Herald, “Don’t let a little April snow fool you. The trend is undeniable: According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), last year was the warmest year on record since 1880. Previously, the hottest year had been 2014, and 15 of the 16 hottest years in history have been since 2000. The 16th was 1998.” With global temperatures on the rise, there are many things that can and will change about our environment. Global warming also has a possibility to cause indirect effects like higher vehicle miles. Higher vehicle miles are the outcome of shorter winters because less snow falling on the roads means people drive more miles.
While everything previously mentioned has been negative, there is one advantage of future global warming in Maine. Related to Maine experiencing shorter winters, we can expect less winter maintenance. This will save money that can possibly offset the expenditures of future global warming. Expenditures can include repairing roads from erosion or raising transportation infrastructure near the cost.
Other than repairing damaged infrastructure, engineers also have to modify current infrastructure that do not stand up to future climate change.
