The essay starts of on topic in the introduction when I explain my trip into the store and why I am there. I then go on to explain my criteria of fit, comfort, style, and price which would keep me on track for the essay. Each criterion has its own paragraph where I explain my reasoning for picking it and which brand of shoe wins in that category. I do not discuss anything in the essay, but the criteria that helps keep the focus on track and easier to follow along with. The Reid textbook says that a well-developed essay is where the writer shows what’s going on and not just coming out and saying it. The essay, “Tangled in the Web,” from the Beyond the Blank Page packet shows this technique nicely in the beginning paragraph. He starts off with, “I was greeted by the blazing, early morning sun which was climbing unrelentingly upward into the sky. It hung over the tree tops casting off the few remaining shadows of the dying night.” The author could have just stated that the sun was rising, but using show, don’t tell the reader is able to picture the scene in their minds more clearly.
