For one, I honestly had no idea that this was a part of life in Harrisonburg because as a student we are fairly removed from the community around us. I personally have not had a strong connection to a violent community or violent individuals, so this clip was very new to eye opening and me. The concept of the fight club, organized by Mr. Wilmore, also known as Scarface, seems unique but I have a feeling other towns have followed suit and are starting to integrate it into their communities. Although the concepts of setting up fights might seem unnecessary, I actually find the concept very worthwhile and effective in keeping people our of jail or alive. The police department might be outright supportive of the idea, but the video at least seems to show they are accepting and tolerant of it. The word “beef” is constantly used during the video as another term for conflict or dispute. While I rarely use the word, to the people in the video, the word “beef” is common in their vocabulary and has become infused in their lifestyle. Scarface has had a rough past, but he has made a change in his life to recruit people with “beefs” to fight out their issues in an organized, official way. The video demonstrates how much control language has in building up a space. For instance, if another more “feminine” word was used instead of “beef” there would be a change in the mood of the environment making the fight zone in the backyard and the confrontations less “masculine”. Throughout the entire video elements of masculinity were emphasized including the outfits, guns, profanity, and of the animalistic backyard
