Human beings are created to be flawed. No one is perfect, and everybody has made mistakes throughout their lifetime. However, the way people cope with their wrongdoings will significantly impact them as an individual. In the following text, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester Prynne’s reputation was ruined with one careless mistake. Despite being hated by everyone in the Puritan community, Hester learned to ignore what the townspeople had to say and tried to create a better life for her daughter and herself. Another piece of writing that is similar to The Scarlet Letter is a poem called “If,” by Rudyard Kipling. From that moment on in her life, Hester became an outcast to society and was never completely forgiven for the sin she had committed. When she first faced the townspeople, it was described as, “Of an impulsive and passionate nature, she had fortified herself to encounter the stings and venomous stabs of public contumely, wreaking itself in every variety of insult…”(64). It is evident that Hester did not fear the crowd, but was prepared to hear the bitter remarks that they had to say. Most importantly, Hester did her best to keep her head held high and refused to show cowardliness. During Hester’s viewing, the text stated, “The unhappy culprit sustained herself as best a woman might, under the heavy weight of a thousand unrelenting eyes, all fastened upon her and concentrated on at her bosom” (64). Under these harsh circumstances, she did not allow the townspeople to overpower her. She accepted her punishment and was ready to move on.
