Which were the the judges of the village. They decided the sentences in cases, whether it was a male or female crime. The Eguwugwu are elders with many titles who wear masks when hearing the cases. The masks represent the ancestral spirits of the community. The Egwugwu are who decided whats good and bad and who to send to the Evil Forest or to exile. The Evil Forest is land beyond the village considered sinister by the Ibo. People who contract infectious diseases like; rosy and chickenpox are considered cursed by the villages. They diseased are taken to the Evil Forest and left to die. One custom in Things Fall Apart is that if twins are born in Umuofia they are seen as a sign of evil and are taken to the forest and left to die. Mr. Smith saw the Ibo people as stupid, monkeys, people who are not civilized. He took away their cultures and traditions. He did not want to understand who they were. Toward the end of the book Mr. Smith shows a fake interest in the Ibo 's culture and traditions.
