Southerners constantly argued for states’ rights and a weak federal government, but it was not until the 1850s that they raised the issue of secession, especially the state of South Carolina. The Fugitive Slave Act was part of the compromise and was passed to deal with the balance between the slave and free states. The Fugitive Slave Act states that any person held to labor and escaped into another state should not be cleared from labor but returned to the owner. The slave act approved slave owners to go into other states to get their slaves. The Fugitive Slave Act caused many abolitionists to increase their efforts against slavery. Abraham Lincoln’s beliefs and actions by passing the emancipation proclamation led to the liberation of African-Americans from the bonds of slavery. The abolitionists also played an important role in the freedom of African Americans. They provided food, shelter, and protection for the runaway slaves. They also provided underground railroads that helped in the escape of runaway slaves. I was not in support of the fugitive slave act but I think it really motivated the abolitionist/north to take action in providing freedom for the slaves. If the reason the south seceded was to protect slavery from abolition, then perhaps a better strategy would have been waiting until such an attempt was actually made.
