The Civil War was a war fought within the United States between the North (Union) and South (confederacy). In the year of 1860 and 1861, seven southern slave states (South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Texas) decided to secede from the Union. South Carolina was the first to secede from the Union. They want laws that protect slavery from being abolished approved. The Northern states wanted abolition, but the South opposed it. The main reason for the south’s secession was the issue of slavery. The Southern states decided to secede because they wanted to keep their slaves for finance purposes, protect their state rights and also because they were against the abolition of slavery.

The abolitionists also played an important role in the freedom of African Americans. They provided food, shelter, and protection for the runaway slaves. They also provided underground railroads that helped in the escape of runaway slaves. I was not in support of the fugitive slave act but I think it really motivated the abolitionist/north to take action in providing freedom for the slaves.
