The Industrial Revolution: The Most Significant Cause Of The Civil War

The Civil War was one of the largest uprisings of all time between the citizens of the same nation. The cause of this horrific event in United States history can be attributed to many different sources, such that it is difficult to narrow the source of this uproar to one specific event. Moreover, I believe there are multiple events that played a significant role leading up to the Civil War. To me, however, the most important cause of the Civil War was the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution set the stage for the majority of the separation between the north and south leading up to the Civil War. One major stepping stone in the Industrial Revolution, as mentioned in the film “Brotherly Love," was the cotton gin, invented by Eli Whitney in 1793. The cotton gin allowed cotton to be removed from its seeds at a quicker rate, thus allowing an increase in cotton output. Such that, as discussed in class, they did not feel that President Lincoln would support them, they felt he would favor the northerners which he would end up doing with the abolishment of slavery. This led to such unrest amongst southerners that it is attributed to being one of the causes of the Civil War. In the book it talks about how the source of this unrest amongst came with the fear that two-thirds of all the speakers of the house and president pro temps had been slave-owners and they wanted that to remain. The election results would prove the unrest amongst southerners as President Lincoln would win the electoral vote by a landslide, while losing the popular vote. This can be attributed to being one of the causes of the Civil War, and it is evident there was major unrest amongst the south, but I do not believe it was nearly as view-changing as the Industrial
