The Civil War ended in 1865, and though the fighting had ended at this time much conflict continued over the years to come. These years are known as the Reconstruction era. The Reconstruction era can be seen as a continuing struggle between the North and South changing directions from a large-scale battlefield war into a political fight. After millions of enslaved people found their freedom, there were still many questions to be answered as to how these people could establish themselves in society in the years to come. The US government deployed the armies to occupy the South and soon after passage three extremely historic amendments to the Constitution. The 13th amendment abolished slavery, the 14th amendment granted birthright citizenship
