The saying, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” Has a special meaning for the United States. It is a country that was formed in 1776 and its people has experienced many events and changes that brought them to where they are today. Its society, culture, behavior and norms are developed through time and does not suddenly appear out of nowhere. Such as the events that occurred after the civil war, World War, the great depression, and Martin Luther King’s movement, all helped shaped how the country is today. The civil war occurred due to the differences of the believes of people, the north and south had disagreements on how to treat colored people. Abraham Lincoln, the President of the United States at the time, issued the Emancipation Proclamation hence began the process of the abolishment of slavery. At the time, African-Americans were treated unequally by white people. They had different rights and jobs, most of the treatment they receive is morally wrong as they would get beaten and killed if they defy an order from white people. They were slaves that worked day and night at a plantation, without decent living accommodation and no education. Lincoln disapproves of this institution but sees it as a way to gain more manpower to win the civil war. His act lead on to the abolishment of slavery by the 13th Amendment. Although this event lead to the equality of rights among all races in the United States, racism and discrimination has not yet completely dissolved. Among the men and women that resides in the country, some still believe in the way of the past, they may have not slaves anymore but they still believe that they have superiority over the other race. After the events of the civil war, America began reconstructing itself slowly until the last decades of the 19th century. Industry began to boom, companies were growing rapidly and by the end of the 19th century, America has grown to be one of the leading country’s in the world in terms of economy and army. Many families were wealthy and America has decided to become an isolationist. They would not meddle with international politics that were happening in Europe at the time. Then came the most devastating economic downfall of the century, the people dubbed it, “The Great Depression”. The great depression is an event that occurred after the stock market crash in 1929, many investors lose interests and leaves wall street in chaos mode. Unemployment rates were rising and production were slowing down due to the amount of consumers that dropped. Many people lost their jobs during this period of time. Depression was at large and people committed suicide because of the situation. Although this event seems saddening, it can be seen as a wakeup call for the United States. Many people were complacent that they would stay wealthy forever even though they were throwing large parties and spend their money without giving it a second thought. In response President Franklin D. Roosevelt, combated the economic downfall by creating new policies that the people had to follow. It helped tremendously in the recovery of the economy, hence bringing the morale of the people up and helping them get through these troubling times. It was in this period of time, “Congress passed a social security act that would provide Americans with unemployment, disability and pension for old age.”. The recovery process can be clearly seen in the United States as it had to switch to high gear when World War 2 began. World War 2 was a pivotal moment in shaping the society of the Unites States. Many families were devastated by the stock market crash and are now recovering slowly with the leadership of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
