The Civil War
The Civil War was a war against two sides of America. The Unions/Yankees and the Confederates. The Union was against slavery and wanted peace with the Confederates, but the Confederates were for slaves and wanted to break away or split apart from the Union and become independent. At this time Abraham Lincoln was the president and gave one of the most famous speeches called The Gettysburg Address. In the end the Union won the war.
The Civil War had many causes, but one main one was to connect the Union and the Confederates again. The Union did not want to have slaves, but the Confederates did want slaves. They had a lot less population than the North.This was a good and a bad thing because that meant more training for less people but that meant they could be outnumbered more often. Another thing about the south was that they knew the land they were fighting on so they could set up traps and ambush from different areas. The South was also called the Confederates.
Out of the many battles of the Civil War on main one was the battle of Gettysburg.One reason this was a very famous battle was because of the speech given after the Union defeated the Confederates there. The speech given by Abraham Lincoln was called The Gettysburg address.This battle was a major battle because many men died. Casualties for the Union were 23,049 and the Confederates were at 28,063 at a grand total of 51,112 casualties (HistoryNet 1).
A famous group that appeared from the civil war ending was the KKK or Ku Klux Klan. This group was founded in 1866. This group became known for killing people, mainly African Americans, for white supremacy. The first leader or “Grand Wizard” of the KKK was Nathan Bedford Forrest. He was previously a Confederate lieutenant general and served as a cavalry officer in many battles including Shiloh and Chickamauga (Ingalls 1). He then retired and joined the KKK. Once done, he was older so he went to oversee a prison camp for his last few years of life and died at the age of 56 in 1877 (HistoryCom
