Slavery Expansion And Economic Impact Of The Civil War

As Abraham Lincoln once said about the war “Both sides deprecated war, but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive, and the other would accept war rather than let it perish, and the war came” ( week 7, Crisis). He was responding to the clams from the North and the South. The North attacked slavery while trying to over come tension between wage labor and capital. One the other hand, the South tried to change to view point of language of rights to help their master to slave rights (week 7, Crisis). Over all, slavery was the key issue that brought the Civil War on, but within the fight of slavery expansion and economic transformation, revolutionary ideas, and Christian reform impacted the war as well. The southern states were farmers, which in turn meant lots of plantation owners. They needed slaves to work on the plantations and most of the North was against slaves. Lots of tension broke out when run away slaves would make their way into norther territory. There was a law that was passed “in Article IV Section 2 for return of fugitive slaves”(week 4, Construction and Expansion). In short, this law stated if a slave ran away from the master and was being keep by someone, the person was held accountable for taking and withholding someones property. In the case Dred Scott v. Sandford you see how legally slaves virtually had no rights. Scott, a slave, claimed to be in a free state therefore, he should be a free man. However, the courts said he did not have means to sue because he was not a citizen and therefor could not sue in the courts.
