The Civil War was fought for many reasons. The Civil War had many effects on citizens. Many families lost someone physically, or some families lost some men mentally due to the brutal fighting many soldiers had gone through. Also, most of the fighting was fought in people’s yards, destroying their gardens and sometimes houses. The battles would destroy anything and everything in its way, taking crops, livestock, and even the families stored food. According to encyclopediavirginia.org, in an article titled “Family Life During the Civil War” by Amy Murrell Taylor, “more than 50 percent of the men who eventually enlisted from Virginia were head of households.” This high number shows that most families were left without money or food. The women and children had to step it up and become the “men” of the house during the Civil War. One Virginia woman wrote that she felt like “...clinging to [her husband] and holding him back upon hearing the news of the enlistment (Murrell Taylor 28). Not only did this woman want to hold back her husband, most families wanted to hold the fathers, grandpas, son 's, or uncles back from
