The Civil War began because of the differences between the slave states and the free slave states to end slavery. The abolitionist movement began in the North, which caused the country to split into North and South. The North and the South fought over constitutional rights because liberty was not defined the same between the North and the South. People in the South supported slavery and not abolition, which led to the Civil War. The South fought for freedom and the North fought for ideals for the constitution. This war would determine which path the United States would take whether to abolish slavery or to split into two different countries. They did not think slaves had right, so if a slave was to escape to a free state they would still be the property of their owners and if they were found they had to be returned to their rightful owner. Congress had reached a series of agreements. Missouri was a slave state and Maine would be a free state, with slavery being in the new western lands abandoned hope for ending war. The battlefield and the cotton famine influenced European attitudes towards slavery. The French and British mills wanted the American cotton that was grown by slaves. Most Europeans abolished antislavery. Lincoln wanted to keep the border slave states and the Northern Democrats as his alliance.
