On December 20, 1860 South Carolina was the first to secede from the US along with Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. As we know today slavery was a huge conflict of early America. The effects of slavery were catastrophic to those held in the bondage of it, but ultimately it helped shape America into what it is today. Many African Americans even today experience the after effects of slavery in terms of racism and discrimination. There are several questions that are often brought up in today’s time regarding this, such as was the Civil War to end slavery, for state’s rights, or for the power to control the West? I think they Civil War was fought because of vendettas between northern and southern states on the idea of slavery, as well as trade, tariffs, and states’ rights. Slave labor was the backbone of the southern economy. Cotton accounted for nearly two-thirds of the U.S. exports trade and added nearly $200 million a year to the American economy. The work they performed was physically demanding. Slaves like carpenters, blacksmiths, and other skilled slaves were allowed to keep a portion of money they earned. Some skilled slaves even learned how to read and write, that type of access to knowledge was denied by field slaves. In…
