Throughout the history in America, there have been struggles of what liberty and rights are given to the people of the land. In the beginning, the Constitution gave the American people the Bill of Rights. The first 10 amendments that protect the citizens from the federal government is the first step of liberties and rights to the citizens of America. But, over time there have been struggles of which the rights belong to in the first place.
According to the Essentials of American Government , a civil right is the government-protected rights of the individuals against the arbitrary or discriminatory treatments by governments or individuals.(O 'Connor, Sabato, & Yanus, 2012) Basically, is protection from the unfairness treatment of the government to their own people. The government should treat a person different from others just based on their race, gender, or disability. At first it wasn’t the case because there were many people that were not given rights based on their gender or race. Some examples, the African-American during the Civil War and Civil Rights Movements during the 1960s; along with, woman suffrage in the 1920s. During these specific time periods, these groups of people were being treated unfair and it broke their civil rights. Meanwhile Essentials of American Government, a civil liberty is the personal guarantees and freedoms that the government cannot abridge by law, constitution, or judicial interpretation.(O 'Connor, Sabato, & Yanus, 2012) These include the…
