The Civil War was an incredibly important event in American history because it divided the nation because of a number of issues. Abraham Lincoln’s policy on slavery and westward expansion created a large amount of tension and eventually resulted states seceding and the formation of the Confederacy. The Confederacy and the Union had many conflicts in belief which eventually resulted in the Civil War when the Confederacy fired on the Union at the Fort Sumter. The Civil War came to a conclusion when Robert E. Lee surrendered after an extreme set back at the Battle of Gettysburg due to the Confederacy’s lack of resources.
