To say that the Civil War is a war based only on slavery would be an over simplified answer of the truth. The war was brewing ever since 1619 when a Dutch trader made port in Jamestown, VA with a ship full of African slaves. Many people today think of the Civil War as the North vs. the South; free states fighting against slave states, right vs. wrong. Even in schools today they are simplifying the causes of the Civil War to save time and money. However, despite the fact that slavery seemed to be at the root of each cause, the War Between the States was inevitable because of the conflicts between the two sides. The economic and social differences between the North and the South, or "infrastructure", is what originally set the two sides apart.

The fight for new territories was so tough that neither side wanted to allow the other to gain any advantage. That 's why when Missouri applied to be a slave state in the Union it was denied because each side already had an equal amount of states, 11 each. So the Missouri Compromise was established on the grounds that: Missouri would be admitted to the Union as a slave state, but Maine would also be admitted as a free state, and slavery would be illegal North of the 36⁰30 ' parallel North of Missouri. This was the first act by congress to find a resolution to the tensions between the two sides, but it would not resolve the issue of slavery. Almost three decades later the Compromise of 1850, a series of five bills, brought the US one step closer to easing and keeping the balance of the two sides.
