Dave Eggers’s book “The Circle” efficiently discusses the negative impact that technology has on society. This book revolves around 24-year-old Mae Holland, a graduate of Minnesota’s elite Carleton College, who lands a job at the Circle thanks to her old roommate and friend Annie. The Circle is a powerful technology company created by “three wise men” who initially created this company to make life easier on the internet and in daily life. The company creates programs like TruYou which combines individuals’ online activity and information into one account for efficiency. I believe that community & communication have been damaged due to constant communication and availability. Technology has advanced so rapidly that it has resulted into a lack of face to face interactions, isolation, and lack of privacy. Little by little, technology has become an integral part of the way that people communicate with one another, which has increasingly taken the place of face-to-face communication. Face-to-face communication is so important, people need face to face interaction to really build a strong relationship with a person. Eggers’ tries to convey in his book that the world is becoming too technologically oriented and is therefore becoming more isolated. In the novel Mae generally became more isolated from her true friends and family as she became more submersed in technology. The relationship that she had with her best friend Annie and her parents diminished due to technology. When the casual usage of this technology turns into addiction, people cannot connect with their close ones and themselves, and that’s what happened with Mae.
