Scientology Definition

The Church Of Scientology is under constant scrutiny if it is a religion and if it should be taxed. Scientology had tax exempt in 1957, but lost in in 1967, and regained exemption in October 1993. It is a grey area if Scientology is a religion in definition and in comparison to others; such as Christianity, Catholicism, Mormon, and Muslim. Organized religion is not taxed in the United States, therefore if Scientology is not found as a religion it should then lose its tax exemption once again. This grey line could be eliminated if religion was taxed in the separation of church and state. Scientology was created by L. Ron Hubbard, a science fiction writer, in the 1950s. A definition? Definitions are all different. The Anthropological definition is often refuted, but illustrates that it is, “a system of symbols which acts to establish powerful, pervasive, and long-lasting moods and motivations in men by formulating conceptions of a general order of existence and clothing these conceptions with such an aura of factuality that the moods and motivations seem uniquely realistic,” according to Charles Joseph Adams in The Encyclopedia Britannica. Religion seems to be the conception on how we were created, and what will happen after one dies. This follows through with the most popular religions: Christianity, Catholicism, Mormon, and Muslim. The Qur’an talks of Allah telling the earth and the heavens to come together, which created the stars and planets. Like Christianity Allah created the earth in six days but there are many key differences. The ‘six days’ is thought of as six periods of time or eons as the Arabic word youm (day) is used to detonate different measurements of time (Islam Creation Story). It is believed that life developed over a long period of time. Like Darwin’s idea of evolution, but Allah power was responsible for creating everything in different stages. It is thought Allah produced the people from the earth. Allah is never done, or finished with his work as the world is still progressing, and the process of creation is ongoing. The Islamic faith teaches, “human beings are a unique life form that was created by Allah in a special way, with unique gifts and abilities unlike any other: a soul and conscience, knowledge, and free will” (Islamic Creation Story). Believers do not believe humans evolved from apes, even though evolution is a part of the belief of evolution. It is believed Adam was made from clay from an attachment to the earth.
