The Church Father’s Response

The reading for this week takes into the minds of a number of church fathers and their views of women. The first church father being discussed was Tertullian, and his view on women suggested that they were nothing but creatures that would considered sexually dangerous and could taint men of church; they would use their beauty in an attempt to “minimize the spiritual damage it wrought in men” (50). Basically, I feel like Tertullian defines women as being objects of desired beauty in which a man can commit sin upon latching themselves onto women. Only she did things that made it so women wouldn’t be described as the weaker sex compared to men. Some of the things she’s done include: making military decisions and choices to prove that women can have “valour which gives strength” (60). There were also sections that described strength in other women like Eve from the story Paradise and Mary Magdalene. Throughout the reading, I feel like each of the church fathers have their own small positive view on women but overall, each of them talk mainly about the women as being objects of affection and them not having any place on being subjective in religion or power in general over their male counterparts. Augustine, for example, calls men the stronger sex and women were “made for men” (78). It felt like that Augustine, much like most of the church fathers, continuously talk about how inferior women are. Each father is considered famous for their works in religion and how they viewed both men and women but I feel like their insults toward women as being objects of sexual desire or even devils that would only drive women to more feminine throughout the years toward our present society.
