Hospitality Analysis

Hospitality To begin the project on Hospitality, I read a couple of articles. The first, Hospitality – a Very Christian Virtue by Gill Robins, talked about the Biblical sense of hospitality and how we are to accept and include others. She gave some examples of how a lack of hospitality can lead to conflict between people. Robins’ article did not emphasize what to do to be hospitable, as much as why we are to be hospitable. Drawing from 1 Timothy 5:10, she says, “Hospitality is about perceiving the needs of others and doing our best to meet them and it’s also about service.” In addition to these articles, I looked up verses about hospitality. Because not everyone had gone home for Thanksgiving break, I wanted to do something to get those that had stayed behind together. Because I do not have enough furniture, we actually did this next door to my apartment, but I cooked us a Mexican meal. It was great to eat, talk, and laugh with other MKs and enjoy memories from past years together. After watching the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, we had an existential talk about the number 42. It was great to be with friends, but even better was knowing that we had a second family during the holidays. For the final hospitality event, I actually did not cook, or do anything in my home. Instead, I took Tim and his girlfriend out to dinner at La Huerta. We talked a little about religion and politics, and how our choices were informed by our beliefs and upbringing. Although all three of us grew up on the mission field, it was interesting to see how different our views were on certain issues. The reason behind that is that I would consider hospitality a spiritual gift of mine. If there was one thing that I took away from this project, it is that hospitality can go a long way. You cannot always see or know what is going on with people, but you can often gauge their response to hospitality. Seeing guests’ happiness is a reward in and of itself. Making time to show hospitality was great as it felt like I was doing something that was spiritually tangible. Some people were definitely more “alone” than others during the holidays, so being a friend to them in that time felt more meaningful.
