Hospitality Analysis

Hospitality To begin the project on Hospitality, I read a couple of articles. The first, Hospitality – a Very Christian Virtue by Gill Robins, talked about the Biblical sense of hospitality and how we are to accept and include others. She gave some examples of how a lack of hospitality can lead to conflict between people. Robins’ article did not emphasize what to do to be hospitable, as much as why we are to be hospitable. Drawing from 1 Timothy 5:10, she says, “Hospitality is about perceiving the needs of others and doing our best to meet them and it’s also about service.” In addition to these articles, I looked up verses about hospitality. Hebrews 13:2 says, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained …show more content…
Because not everyone had gone home for Thanksgiving break, I wanted to do something to get those that had stayed behind together. Because I do not have enough furniture, we actually did this next door to my apartment, but I cooked us a Mexican meal. It was great to eat, talk, and laugh with other MKs and enjoy memories from past years together. After watching the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, we had an existential talk about the number 42. It was great to be with friends, but even better was knowing that we had a second family during the holidays. For the final hospitality event, I actually did not cook, or do anything in my home. Instead, I took Tim and his girlfriend out to dinner at La Huerta. We talked a little about religion and politics, and how our choices were informed by our beliefs and upbringing. Although all three of us grew up on the mission field, it was interesting to see how different our views were on certain issues. Aside from the main topics of contention, how we viewed things like social justice, entitlements, and war were very …show more content…
The reason behind that is that I would consider hospitality a spiritual gift of mine. If there was one thing that I took away from this project, it is that hospitality can go a long way. You cannot always see or know what is going on with people, but you can often gauge their response to hospitality. Seeing guests’ happiness is a reward in and of itself. Making time to show hospitality was great as it felt like I was doing something that was spiritually tangible. Some people were definitely more “alone” than others during the holidays, so being a friend to them in that time felt more meaningful. Although we can always be hospitable towards others, sometimes, we need to show love either at specific times, or for specific

If I do something nice for you, I do not expect you to do anything for me. I believe that character is what you do when no one is looking. Reciprocity would cause an issue with people expecting to have the whole world handed to them after they opened a door for someone at the mall. I also believe that if someone was to smash my headlight with a baseball bat that I should not do that to them. The Bible tells us to “do unto to others as they would to you” but the Bible also teaches us to “turn the other cheek”.…

By: Will Dowd A scene of hospitality from books 1-8 are simply extraordinary, but I will be focusing on book 1. In book one of the Odyssey, Athena visits Telemachus and Telemachus gives her any seat she would like. He then sends a maid to get a golden pitcher. As the author states in the Odyssey, "A maid brought water soon in a graceful golden pitcher, and over a silver basin tipped it out, so they may rinse their hands, then pulled a gleaming table to their side.…

Two of the most influential ancient works, the Bible and the Odyssey, are saturated with tales of hospitality and the awesome displays of power in punishing those who don’t welcome and accept their guests generously and willingly. As our methods of travel become faster and less personal, it becomes clear that hospitality does not hold the same spot in our contemporary society as it did in the worlds of Abraham, Lot and Odysseus. However, few things remain as heartwarming as being greeted by a host with open arms and open hearts, suggesting that at least this aspect of their ancient culture remains…

In Homer’s great poem, The Odyssey, one of the central themes in the story is the idea of hospitality. Homer shows two sides to this theme, the side of the guests and how they treat their hosts, and the counter, hosts and how they treat their guests. Homer also shows various examples of these interactions, with differing ways in which the hosts and guests. Additionally, Homer shows multiple different outcomes for the hosts and/or guests. In the process, Homer is showing his perception on how the reasons for why you are offering the hospitality are important as to how you are judged, usually by the gods.…

Service is something that is near and dear to my heart, and this trip was no exception. My FYS group and I went to a local non for profit Atlas (Attaining Truth, Love, And Self-control) to do projects they needed done. This organization works with troubled people who need a mentor or a shoulder to lean on. Because they are a non for profit and are very busy, the people on pay roll didn’t have the time to do yard work or extra jobs around the building.…

The point of the gospels is to learn about Jesus Christ and his word of God that he delivers to people in hopes they will learn to become faithful, decent followers of God. Specifically, “Luke’s narrative of the story of Jesus can be summarized as the human life and message of the Son of God. In view of the disciples’ association with Jesus, it can also be seen as the human life and message of those who share in his divine sonship” (LaVerdiere 62). Luke’s Gospel was conceived in a time after Jesus was alive, so it was formatted to be more relevant to that current society’s issues. Luke is trying to get across the point that, yes, Jesus was alive a while ago and society has changed since then, but that does not mean his word and teachings are not still alive today.…

I stayed overnight at L’Arche International in Clinton, Iowa from October 13th-October 14th as my community service project. L’arche is a nonprofit organization that provides home, community, and and support for adults who have intellectual disabilities. During this time, my group and I participated in birthday celebrations, prayer, song, community service, and sharing life. This opportunity allowed me the chance to both learn and reflect about this marginalized population. When we initially got to L’Arche, we were greeted by the student coordinator, Bethany.…

Myself, leading the busy life of a full time college student miss the times I had cooking with my family and no surprise, I watch cooking shows in my spare time. Everyone wishes they could come together every night for a home cooked meal like the ones presented on these shows. What sane person doesn’t? “So cooking matters - a lot, which, when you think about it, should come as no surprise”, writes Michael Pollan, Author of “The Cooking Animal” (Pollan 106). Its not that we enjoy slaving in a hot kitchen for two or more hours, its the simple fact that shared meals provide a catalyst for families to come together, relax and connect with one another, which makes all of the hard work worth it.…

The Odyssey, still today, is one of the most recognized epic poems of all times. An important theme evident throughout the epic poem is hospitality. Hospitality, the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers, is very important to the gods and goddesses. It is just as important for the guest to honor the host as it is for the host to honor the guest. A violation of the expected treatment of a guest or host during ancient Greek times would often result in violence.…

Throughout the Odyssey, hospitality was shown as an important aspect. It shared many instances where strangers treated strangers like family. As the story focused on the travels of Telemachus and Odysseus, I noticed many times where people treated them well and welcomed them with gifts. Compared to modern times, hospitality was very useful within society, people were treated with kindness and generosity because of the fear towards the gods, they did this through welcoming one another into each other’s homes, and in most cases, in this time period, Greek hospitality was considered a key aspect in society. Society today, is not like this.…

Be yourself, as there’s no one else you can be, and no one else can fill in that place, and let ‘yourself’ be good. “Be as if you were facing a noble guest,” is especially important, as it implies how you should treat yourself. One doesn’t just backtalk to a guest, especially a noble one, either in the flashy way of kings and queens, or the heartfelt way of close friends and loved ones. Treat yourself as you would treat others, specifically the best of others. The Golden Rule.…

Although the entire story of Hercules isn’t fully devoted to the theme of good and bad hospitality, a portion of it very clearly depicts the essence of its importance. As the great hero Hercules continued to repeat his well-known vicious cycle of mistake and repentance, he came to the home of Admetus to spend a night. Upon entering his house, Hercules sensed the great mourning of the people milling about the house despite Admetus’ attempt to appear joyous. When Hercules inquired about whom the mourning was for, Admetus simply said that a women of the household had passed away of which he was not related and insisted Hercules stay. Still naive however, Hercules enjoyed a wonderful feast while his host was attending the funeral.…

When I was in middle school I was part of a church group called Pathfinders; and being a part meant that every holiday the group would do volunteer work for the community. Around thanksgiving we would collect food, walking door to door, and later give it to a local food kitchen. And around Christmas time there would be a toy collection for families in need. Having this past experience under my belt, it motivated me to volunteer my time with other students from Kean at the local food pantry. Another reason why I chose this volunteer work was because the other options did stick out to me as so impactful as this one.…
