My students work towards increasing their academic skills which can be intertwined with learning social, gross motor, fine motor, self help, and vocational skills. I have received new students into my classroom with goals that are set far above the child 's abilities. An example of a goal that was not practical was that within one year the student would read 1st grade level words. This student could not identify her first name from a field of two. Another example of a student 's absurd goal was the student would use the toilet independently. The goal was set to high for this student. how to dress and undress themselves. Use the toilet, wash and dry their hands. Simple chore type activities that can also be practiced in the home. wipe tables, sweep floors, empty garbage, fold clothes, hang up clothing, clean up dishes after eating by putting dishes, silverware, and cups in the sink when done. Get a drink of water. Sit and wait. Feed self with spoon or fork. I understand that for many wheel chair bound handicapped student some of these functional activities are not possible for them to perform but if a student can use their hands and arms there are many functional skills the student can
