For example, in The Chosen Reb Saunders, Danny’s father, is molding Danny to be a hasidic tzaddik and pressuring him to conform to the copious tzaddik customs at a young age. Danny is nearly broken attempting to adhere to the absurd expectations when during his second year of college a zionist movement arises and he is forced to be anti-zionist and excommunicate zionists. During this time Danny is silent to Reuven due to the requirements set forth by his father which severely stifles his grades and mental outlets. Danny struggled through these times and found himself almost craving to talk to Reuven and ignore his expectations. Likewise, Jing Mei experiences a point in which she too nearly snaps under her expectations in “Two Kinds”. Jing is expected to become a prodigy during her childhood; however, she is never able to quite master the art she is educated on. For example, Jing is required to perform at a piano concert. During this concert Jing commits several critical errors and is ridiculed by the observer. They relate in that in both pieces, the teenagers receive unfathomable amounts of stress through their parental pressures with Danny from Reb and Jing from her mother. Additionally, they relate in their realizations of why their parents raise them in the way they do with Reb Saunders explaining why to Danny and Jing’s mother sending Jing a message to understand her point of view. Nonetheless, the two pieces of writing lacked resemblance in some categories like the chances available to the teenagers. Danny has one that is clear while Jing has plethora, with both amounts of availability of chances relating back to the different experiences under the different methods of pressures. Finally, Danny and Jing differed in their relations with their parents as a result of the parental pressures. Jing was much closer to her mother contrasting Danny’s relation with his father, for Jing’s mother was involved in all facets of Jing’s life, for a time. Reb, however, was more secluded from Danny’s life with both of the protagonists relationships being results of parental pressures. All in all, the parental pressures of the novel The Chosen and the short story “Two Kinds” cause similar and different experiences in the lives of Danny Saunders and Jing
