Want to read a book whose rich themes will make a long lasting impression on readers worldwide? In The Chosen by Chaim Potok, the main character, who is an orthodox Jewish teenager named Reuven, tells a story that will impact the hearts and minds from all walks of life. During a heated baseball game, a baseball shatters Reuven’s glasses and his eye becomes injured so badly that doctors are unsure if it will heal, and he ends up in a hospital for a week. Once there, he meets people he will never forget, and forms a strong friendship even with the one person he knew he hated. The book exhibits an array of thought-provoking themes. A friendship does not have to start out well, as was the case with Danny and Reuven. They had a pretty rough start considering Danny hit the ball that injured Reuven’s eye, and Reuven held a grudge at first. Danny visited Reuven in the hospital and humbly apologized, and presently, Reuven forgave him and so the lasting friendship began, and they became inseparable. Readers glimpse their friendship grow as they daily meet at the library where they selflessly spur each other on in their challenging studies and visit each other’s houses and overall are there for each other through life’s ups and downs. Reuven’s father accurately predicts what Reuven and Danny’s friendship would be like. “Reb Saunders’ son is a terribly torn and lonely boy. There is literally no one in the world he can talk to. He needs a friend. The accident with the baseball has bound him to you, and he has already sensed in you someone he can talk to without fear… And I want you to let him be your friend and to let yourself be his friend in such a friendship.” Their friendship begins with an apology and an extension of forgiveness which manifests all lasting friendships which theirs defiantly
