Leadership Observation Report

Throughout the course, paired with my own observations, I feel more confident that I understand what I have decided to do with much more clarity and with an unexpected gravity. The choice to become an administrator is not one that should be taken lightly because it has so many avenues of need, influence, and power. With these avenues comes responsibility and not just anyone could balance in a structured, respected way as some of the individuals I have been observing can. However, if I can continue to learn about and strive toward becoming this type of leader, I can make an impact in the world that I never thought possible just five years ago.

By taking what I learned from these individuals, I may be able to combine those strengths and adapt them to make my leadership style just as effective. For instance, Kerry Purcell has a kindness and compassion about her that is warm and inviting, not only to students, but to all of her staff and parents as well. Ms. Dunbar is logical and strategic. She knows that jumping into change is not something that is effective. Effective change takes time and she handles this almost exactly as Fuller
THE IDEAL PRINCIPAL 3 describes this process in Leading in a Culture of Change. Dr. Ayala has the energy and the aggressive passion it takes to make huge strides with a struggling population.
It is interesting that my own principal staff all have these traits between them as well. They also recognize how to work with people. Not just the “keep a smile on your face and play nice” type of working with people, but really understanding the school as a living organism as suggested by Fuller. An administrator alone cannot teach the student how to be a citizen and alone cannot keep the student safe from building hazards and other people. This is why it is important to have a relationship with staff that allows one to monitor and improve the environment in which a student is expected to learn. This standard reminds me that a broken down building or problem with bullying can be just as detrimental to an education as not teaching the student at all. While what happens inside the building is vital to a student’s education, what happens outside of it can play a large part as well. This is why the fourth standard focuses on collaboration with the community and outside influences of the students’ lives such as parents and programs that can either reinforce or destroy the development of the student (Educational Leadership Program Recognition Standards 2011). An administrator is tasked will reaching out to the community that the students will one day live in without the help of teachers and counselors and one cannot prepare a student for this without having an understanding of it themselves. Also, the community can be an advocate for these children and reinforce the strides a school is making towards a budding
