Drawings and writings of children in this stage is more advanced and detailed as it is supported by the physiological maturation and cognitive advances that are characteristic of middle childhood development. In school, I enjoyed learning to write the alphabet, and I would write for many hours when I’m at home, perfecting my “craft”. I remember my teacher always praised me for my beautiful penmanship. In the book, Laura Berk states that during this stage of development children become self-conscious and begin to see themselves in comparison with others. It is important that the physical needs and development of children is encompassed into the learning environment seamlessly in order to ensure no undue stress or concern is placed on the child. In girls, the beginnings of puberty commence between age 8 and 13 years as the breasts begin to develop and a growth spurt commences. At this stage, gross motor skills have been developed sufficiently and physical movements are smooth and rhythmic. As a teacher, it is important to incorporate different levels and ability and skill during physical activities and skills to ensure each student continues to develop and gain competence in physical tasks (Berk, pg.
