The Child Narrator

Improved Essays
The Child Narrator After reading the article Child Narrators, I found it to be quite enlightening as both a reader and a writer. Several of the concepts in the article were very interesting. One passage that evoked a high interest was about the inconvenient truths uncensored. According to the passage “A child narrator can, among other things, create a degree of distance between the adult author and his or her message that serves to lessen hostility to that message… Readers tend to be more accepting of a child rather than an adult who gives voice to certain uncomfortable truths.” (Michael Seraphinoff). By creating this distance, I think it makes tough topics a bit simplistic and easier to deal with if told through the perspective of a child.

Researcher, Tamar Lewin in her article “Above Expectation: A Child As Witness” argues that child witnesses are unreliable for information and can’t tell fact from fiction. She supports her claim by first writing about Sarah Ahn story of a child leading police to arrest a murder with the child giving accurate descriptions, then provide dialogue of interviews with professors about this case, then gave examples of child witnesses in history, and finally provide descriptions of Daycare abuse cases from the 1980s proving children can’t tell the difference between truth or fiction. Lewin’s purpose is to inform the reader about reliability of child witnesses in order to give a larger picture of a frequently asked question of “Can we use children…

Invisible Children Several people utilize the word “narration”, but it is unfortunate that they do not have the idea of what it means. Narration is simply to give account of events informing what occurred at a particular time and place. Narratives are written for several reasons such as to explain events, to entertain, to connect with others, and to persuade others to accept a specific point of view. The sanctuary of school by Lynda Barry is a good narrative account whose effect and results of character actions can be easily spotted.…

In his article, David LaBounty claims that those who write children’s literature take on roles so that they can teach children how to lie and when to use lies in their lives. LaBounty uses several different examples of authors and their stories to show how they teach children about lying. Aesop’s fables, such as “The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf,” are the first stories that LaBounty uses to support his claim. Aesop’s fables are used to discuss how being honest is always better than lying and that lying can have negative effects on characters. After introducing Aesop’s fables LaBounty discusses how parents want their children to be honest, but that not all lies are bad.…

What’s good about this is that children may not realize how often they or others interrupt people who are speaking. Another important component to the story is how the author writes “I have a lot to say, and all of my words are very important to me”. This shows that the author knows that children’s own thoughts, feelings, and needs are the important to themselves. All children need to be aware that their own thoughts, feelings, and needs are important and should be respected. Also, the humor brought into the book really helps to keep the children interested and interacting with the book.…
