It is one of the most harsh child abuse cases in California history. It is the autobiography of David Pelzer who was physically and emotionally abused by his mentally disturbed mother, who played sick games that left him nearly dead. The psychological scars left on his mind and memory and will be accompanied him for the rest of his life.
The events take place generally at Dave’s house in ordinary two-floor home in Daly City, California where David lives with his family during the mid-60s and 70s. . The Bitch, when she exceeded humiliating, beating, and starving to anther stage t became a monster when she was drunk, she forced him to swallow small amounts of ammonia and soap twice, pushed him to stay in freezing water for hours, burned his arm on an open fire on kitchen stove, and stabbed him with a knife.

The main conflict in the story is between Dave and his mother, unfortunately, the writer doesn’t mention why she changed from loving mother to an abusive mother.
The fact that his mother was an alcoholic is not enough reason to her schizophrenic behaviour; I think there is a history of abuse in her past family life when she was a child, the abusiveness can expresses itself in a cycle, passed down from generation to generation.
The other factor may be she had a great amount of pressure and stress especially that the father was a fire-fighter and he is required to stay away for long periods of time.
