Challenges Of The Child Advocacy Center: The Child Advocacy Center

1. The non-profit organization that I teamed up with over the course of the semester is The Child Advocacy Center (CAC), located here in the city of Lincoln Nebraska. Their goal as a facility is to foster hope and healing, seek justice, and reduce trauma for children who may have experienced different types or other traumatic situations such as physical or sexual abuse. They work to provide a variety of services to families including medical evaluations, professional interviews, but most importantly, the work to provide advocacy and support to these children and their non-offending caregivers. I had the privilege of working directly with Christy Prang, the director of training and prevention. 2. Going into this community project, my goal …show more content…
She wanted me gather perspective of other organizations, but more specifically wanted me to pay detailed attention to the precise language that these websites and pamphlets used. Christy explained that she always is finding new organizations that inspire her but does not exactly have the time to go through and look at them with the time that they deserve. I was able to examine all of the resources and break down exactly what type of language these organizations were using and what message they were promoting through their words. These resources including things such as other non-profit organization’s websites, child books about what abuse can look like, new laws or awareness programs previous abuse survivors are working towards enforcing around the country, and a variety of …show more content…
The majority of the education I feel I have received in the past on child abuse has been centered around the warning signs of the children, and long-term consequences these children may face as a result. Before this volunteer work there was very few I knew about the offenders themselves. During my time spent at the CAC Christy shared with me, which was verified in my research, the process known as ‘grooming’. This is the process of when an offender begins to lure a child into sexual relationships and in most instances the child does not even realize this is happening. This process includes steps such as gaining the child’s trust, isolating the victim, sexualizing the relationship, and then maintaining complete control of the child. Although these offenders can be any race, gender, or age, the majority are going to be men looking to work at an organization of company with few or ill enforced protocols and an overpopulated amount of kids. They will use this position of leadership to take advantage, and prey on

Lastly I have used the rhetorical appeal, ethos to achieve credibility. I included the story of a young girl, Mia Franklin, to allow my audience see a situation first hand of a child whose life has been turned around by a social worker, rather than take my word for it. This child has battled through a lot in her life and with her story being shared, the audience will likely remember it and want to prevent other acts just as this one from happening. My table tent will hopefully serve to be very effective or at the least allow students to walk away with information they did not previously…

My professional goal is to obtain a Walden’s Master of Social Work degree with a specialization in crisis and trauma intervention. I would especially like to work with individuals affected by crisis, trauma, and grief, and help them overcome their personal and social problems that have, without a doubt, strong negative influences on their lives. Studying at Walden University is important to me, because this school will give me the knowledge and skills that I need to help people make the most of their own abilities, develop skills, and empower them to reach their goals. In the future, after gaining more knowledge and experience about mental health, I want to create mental health service agencies across the United States that will help the…

“People often picture child sex offenders as unclean men with a long beard and a black trench coat. This, however, is typically not the case” (“Inside the Mind”). The image of the common sex offender is very misconstrued. Many times they are not rough and gritty men, but more so clean cut gentlemen. Many people tend to think that a child molester is a strange man that swoops up a child out of nowhere but, the truth is that most offenders know their victims before they assault them.…

During my time there, I was a front desk assistant and could view and direct individuals to all the services the organization had to offer. CHS provides services such as residential group care, child welfare case management, emergency shelter, foster home management, adoption, and other vital programs to the surrounding Big Bend community (CHS, 2018). It was interesting to observe which individuals used which services and the impact said services had on their well-being. At one point, I discussed the various services and solutions provided with Kevin Winship, LMHC, the Director of Program Operations at CHS. His insight was vital in my acknowledgement of effective administration as necessary to effective social work.…

My desire to pursue a master’s degree in social work was fueled by the outcome of my experiences of learning about domestic violence in my undergraduate course. It was also influenced by my active role different organizations where I was able to provide care for child victims of domestic violence. The desire of furthering my studies started way back when I was volunteering at a non-profit organization with an objective of becoming more familiar in working with children that were coming from a less advantaged families. Initially, the organization I was working for did not give me information about the children I was taking care of; they did not tell me that the children were victims of domestic violence. Upon entry, I observed all the children…

People that participate in child sexual abuse and exploitation are generally able to organize and plan out the abuse by utilizing multiple methods, such as coercion, using pornography to normalize the actions to the victim, and the use of violence (Itzin, 41). This shows the offenders ability to weight he cost/benefit of their actions in choosing their victims, primarily if the initial target is a child related to the offender. While it does not seem to be the definite reason, it seems logical to speculate that offenders will begin with a lost risk victim, such as a family member. In cases of rape, it is in the best interests of the rapist to offender someone known to them, primarily a family member as the risk of discovery is relatively low (Vaughan, 124). There is a similar situation as in many cases family members are not aware of the sexual abuse happening within a family (Itzin, 36).…

America has many important problems that need help and solutions. One of those issues is child abuse. Child abuse is one of the biggest problems in America, “more than five children die every day as a result of child abuse” (Tennyson Center For Children). Regrettably, in the 80’s and early 90’s and even before that, child abuse was not an issue that could be solved by a social worker, rather it was an unseen issue, an issue that not even the authority could intervene. Fortunately, in the late 80’s non governmental charities came into existence to devote to child protection.…
