The Chicago Experience

Decent Essays
This summer I had the opportunity to go on a mission trip to Chicago with my youth group. This experience changed my life in ways I cannot comprehend, and really opened my eyes to see how imperfect this world is and that a little help can go a long way. It was a great experience to dedicate my time to serve in multiple food kitchens, thrift stores, children centers, and church ministries.
Going to a big city, where there is a lot of crime, people with nothing and living on the streets, children misbehaving in classes because at home the only way they can get attention sometimes is by misbehaving, is just very overwhelming. I love my community and I would not have wanted to be born and raised anywhere else, however living in such a small rural

Girl Scouts was a big part of my life when I was young and it really helped prepare me for the future in some ways. I learned a lot about responsibility during our famous cookie sales. When we did our booth sales I got a lot of practice trying to make good sales. I was often told that I would make a great saleswoman which is a great skill to have when looking for a job. The camping trips helped me learn a little more about independence, responsibility, and respect.…

The plot behind the musical Chicago is one of the most brilliant and exciting plots in a musical that I have ever seen. The story starts off when Roxie Hart who is a chorus girl performer is out performing and a man named Fred, who is a furniture salesman. Fred and Roxie stumble to Roxie house, where they later have intercourse. After they finished, Roxie kept asking Fred if he would follow up on his offer, which was that he would use a connection that he had with a club owner to get Roxie a better gig as a performer. Then Fred proceeds by violently pushing away Roxie until she fell, telling her that he lied to her just so that they could have intercourse.…

The Great Chicago Fire was one of the most horrible disasters in history. The incident was when the city of Chicago experienced a horrible spread of fire from an unknown source. Before the fire, Chicago was a huge city that was mostly made out of a very flammable type of wood, and during the time the city had not gotten any rain, and the winds caused the fire to spread even faster. The fire was said to be started at Catherin O’Leary’s barn, and many people say that it started when she was milking her cow, the cow kicked over an oil candle and the fire started to spread, but other theories such as a comet hitting the area are present.…

During the summer, I enjoy going to the downtown area and watch the city come to life. There is always something to see or do during the summer months in the Chicago land area. Just exploring the lakefront by walking or riding a bike is exciting. To see so many people riding their bikes and running is enough to motivate anyone. The biggest problem I have is finding time to fit these activities into my schedule.…

Chicago is known for having many neighborhoods and each one having individual cultures and identities. The city has more than 200 neighborhoods and 77 community areas and all of them have a deep history that when combined with the others, it creates the complex history of the city we know today. Each neighborhood has unique cultural aspects and historical landmarks, in which the city encourages tourist and locals to go and explore them in each neighborhood. Chicago is a great city with even greater problems. With crime such as shootings, and homicides, at an all time high right now there is no doubt the city is falling apart. According to the Chicago Tribune, from January 1st, 2015 to December 6, 2015 the yearly total of shooting victims were 2,777 people. Not only does this number show how many people have died or been injured due to homicides or shootings, but it also gives everyone a view on the state of Chicago today. Our city is being greatly affected by perpetrators and their unfathomable acts but I believe there needs to be a change here in Chicago, and everywhere else where this is a problem.…

    Why Go To Chicago

There are many reasons why I would like to go to the University of Chicago, but I’d like to start off with the academic aspect of the university. While not specifically a Liberal Arts college, it seems to me that “The Core” is very akin to a Liberal Arts curriculum in the sense that it forces you to expand yourself into different disciplines. I am a big believer in learning about everything because, as I have found, everything is interconnected. With “The Core” curriculum at the University of Chicago, that message of nondiscriminatory learning is clearly emphasized and I know that I will grow as both a person and a student in that kind of an environment. Once I complete “The Core” curriculum, I will be able to focus more on my major working with world-renown faculty solving the world’s problems one step at a time.…

I hadn’t been home in almost a year but as I rode through the south-side of Chicago I noticed nothing but run-down buildings throughout the black and brown communities. What was once local shops, churches, community centers, schools, homes, and gardens were now replaced by empty lots filled with patches of dandelions and weeds. Developing and uplifting communities of color has been my main focus for several years. Recently, there has been a perpetuated distortion of Chicago; without any signs of rebuilding the community, restructuring the educational system, or providing any form of economic support. If history had shown us anything, it is that we can not depend solely on the governmental system to provide equitable access to economic, social, and educational opportunities.…

Just this summer, the senior high went on a weeklong domestic missions trip to Coatesville, Pennsylvania, as camp counselors to underprivileged, adorable kids. One Friday of every month, I meet with a discipleship group in my area, and I attend the special game nights for the senior high. Towards the end of October, I will be attending a prayer retreat, and hopefully in the summer I will be heading to Zambia for a missions outreach.
