Iron is an element because it has one type of atom and it can be found on the periodic table by itself .That salt (Na+Cl) is a compound because it has two types of atoms and both atoms/elements can be found on the periodic table separately. That magnetic means attractive force to a magnet and, that Iron powder is magnetic. Magnetism is a physical property because it is a reversible property and it can be observed without changing the substance into something new. Solubility is the ability to dissolve in water and salt is able to dissolve in water. Solubility is a physical property because its reversible, it changes in size and shape, and it can be observed without changing the substances without changing the substances to form a new one. In this investigation, we wanted to …show more content…
What physical properties did you observed in each of the components (iron, salt, and sand) of the mixture? I observed the physical property of magnetism in the iron powder and the physical property of solubility in sand (insoluble in water) and salt (soluble in water). The magnetism attracted the iron powder to the magnet and, since the salt is soluble in water it got filter out with the water, but the sand didn’t get filtered out because it insoluble in water.
2. How did these physical properties help you to separate the components of the mixture (including the name of the each method)? The magnetism helped separate the iron powder because the iron powder has the property of magnetism. The iron powder stuck to the magnet in the plastic bag. The property of solubility helped separate the salt and sand because salt can dissolve in water, while sand cannot. So the salt filter out with the water but since salt is insoluble it didn’t get filtered out. The property of solubility helped separate the water from the salt too, by evaporation.
3. Did any of the components share other similar physical properties (e.g. states of the matter. size. shape, color, texture, etc.)? Yes the components share other similar properties like their sate of matter they are all solids (the iron powder, salt, and
