The science fair topic at hand is whether or not chemical compounds affect water 's heat resistance/reception. In other words, how does the temperature of water (H2O) change when chemical compounds - such as sodium chloride and sucrose - are added? In this experiment, the independent variable is the chemical compound being tested while the dependent variable is the temperature of the water. The constants are the surface being tested on which is a stove, the amount of water being used, the amount of grams used for the sodium chloride and the sucrose, and the time that is set for the water to heat up. What is controlled in the experiment …show more content…
There are various solids that can dissolve into a liquid with their solubility causing an increase in temperature. The solvent molecules of a liquid can break apart solute molecules (that are supposed to be bonded by intermolecular attractions) by the increase of kinetic energy. Whereas, kinetic energy increases with temperature and its vibrations causes the solute molecules to dissolve more easily. Kinetic energy is energy that a body possesses by virtue of being in motion. Solubility is the ability for a given substance, the solute, to dissolve in a solvent. The amount of solubility in a solvent depends on the temperature. Salts typically show an increase in solubility with the increase of temperature. A retrograde or inverse solubility is dependent on temperature. During the process of recrystallization, a substance of which takes up volume and is insoluble within a solvent can become soluble after it is heated up. (Suryanarayana, C. (1999). It can be lowered by lowering the pressure of the air of which will push down on the water so its molecules can escape into the air. The boiling point raised if a solute is dissolved into it. How much the boiling point is raised depends on how much of the solute there is. This makes the water dilute which means that most of the water molecules are at the bottom and few can escape. This is known as reducing vapor pressure of water. Table salt breaks into a sodium ion and chloride ion, so there are two particles. Sucrose would remain as one particle. (Your Mother Was a Chemist. (n.d.). Retrieved from http://kitchenscience.sci-toys.com/boiling_freezing_pressure). The question that this research helps answer is that the sodium chloride and sucrose will have some effect on the water once they are mixed and heated. This research helps to understand how solutes like sodium chloride and sucrose affect water. Also, what the properties of water and other compounds were. All the information researched has concluded that the solutes dissolved in water will only increase the
