Jason Alsher, a sports writer for a website called The Cheat Sheet, said that Floyd Mayweather was the highest paid athlete of 2015, earning $300 million (Alsher). That is more than triple of what WNBA players earn. An editor of the official ESPN website said that the National Basketball Association (NBA) set their salary cap at $70 million, at a record 11% increase in 2015 (ESPN). The $70 million is spent just to sign free agents, and some athlete’s salaries only amount to that much! The National Football League (NFL) told sports reporter Kevin Patra that the NFL salary cap for the 2015-16 season was set at $143.28 million (Patra). Same as the NBA salary cap, it’s a high amount just to sign free agents. F. Taylor, who is a journalist for Urban Intellectuals, interviewed Floyd Mayweather for an article and reported him saying “Well, he got all his money, why is he not giving it to Africa? Well what has Africa given to us? What has Africa came and gave to my children and family? Things work two ways” (Taylor). Floyd Mayweather made $300 million in a single year, and he still refuses to donate to a good cause.
Some people may argue that the reason sports stars get paid so much is because they run a risk of getting injured. John Ciaran, the author of “Salary for a Rookie Cop in NYPD”, says that New York City police only average a salary of $50,000 per year (Ciaran). Police officers run a major risk of getting injured, or even killed. Why would we pay someone more for less of a
